Japan By Dom Bower

I lived in Japan for a year and had a great time, Would recommend it to anyone and everyone, but not so great for a short holiday.  In 2010 Kim and I went back for a 3 week holiday to see all our friends back there.  Here are all the videos from the trip, some music ones as well.

I have also added all the videos made from the first year that we were there.

Flash photography tips (all the basics)

Lots of videos here and after the break  (flash and Shutterspeed, Aperture, Iso and White balance)

Circular Polarisers (and quantum physics!)

Circular Polarisers (or polarizers if your American) are great for getting more saturation in your sky and taking some reflections off of things such as puddles, and cars and wet roads.

They do also take out a stop or 2 of light entering the camera.

But here is a good way to show how you can test your CirPol to see if it is good!.

After the break here is a video that kinda explains how it works

My new photography book. click below

All cameras are racist!

Digital cameras and their metering modes are always looking for  a gray area, they dont want things to be too bright or too dark.  that is why when shooting in snow you have to give positive compensation as it is trying to make all the beautiful white snow … Gray!

The same is true for skin tones as well.

  • When shooting people with very Fair skin you will likely have to give a bit of Positive Exposure or flash Compensation

  • whens shooting people with very Dark skin you will likely have to give a bit of Negative Exposure or Flash Compensation

Hague Steady Cam, motion-cam stabilizer

Steadicams are expensive as chuff!

Here was my attempt of a free steadycam, way back when I was living in japan

a steadicam is not all gyroscopes and magic but acutally just good counter balance.  you can make a free version just buy attaching your camera to your tripod and holding it in the correct location

OMG! EXTREME MACRO

Ok what happens when you put a nikon 105mm f2.8 macro lens on a canon 550d which has a cropped sensor of 1.6, You get a very interesting close up video.

But what happens when you then go for the MOVIE CROPPED MODE where it uses only the central 640 x 480 pixels? you get an extra 7 times zoom.

check this video.
no in camera cropping or moving of the lens and this is how close you can get with this combo!

When you add up all the cropping you get an equivalant focal length of 1176mm!  eye ball photography here I come!

Ken Doesn't know well? (Ken Rockwell Discussion)

I still get notifications when anyone and everyone puts up a post on any of my videos, and this one really struck my attention.

It goes like this:

The first posts were from Megasromanos and he asked on this video

Hey,
when i do the same zoom in with a raw foto from my nikon D70s its not so sharp in resolution ?
Is it because i shoot with the 18 - 70 mm 3,5 f ?
Or maybe it's the 7 megapixels instead of the "i dont know how much your camera has" diffrence ?
thanks

so its not the megapixels that lacks my nikon d70s too get some good results ?
I did the whole setup like rockwell tells on his website about the D70 menu & settings to boost the camera colours and other things like whitebalans on auto and set to - 2 and so on.
I read many books and tutorials so i'm getting there and the result on my d70s lcd looks great but when i see the pics on my pc ...
it looks like a new compactcamera can give more coulour and sharpness.

Then came the reply from EctoplasmicResidue'

"I did the whole setup like rockwell tells on his website"
You're WAY off, even though Rockwell knows a great deal about testing lenses, everyone knows he knows nothing about practical photography.

Rant continues after the break

A little bit of music (Julien Pierrefeu) super low light video

This was a bit of a super low light lens test/ camera test/ microphone test

I was sitting on the ground right beside the massive speaker, I had my external microphone sitting ontop of the speaker. the sound does not sound as good as it did in the club. The microphone is a very old piece I got several years ago to record lectures at University.

Videos shot with the Nikon 20mm ais lens,
@ f2.8
on the Canon 550D
@1080p
@25p
@6400iso
